Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba early in the 20th century, it is a method of self-defence that involves throws and joint locks that are derived from Ju-Jitsu. It focuses on harmonising with the opponent to bring peaceful resolutions involving conflict, as it’s all about using their own energy to control the opposition, punching or kicking is not allowed. Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury.

Aikido techniques consist of entering and turning movements that redirect the momentum of an opponent's attack, and a throw or joint lock that terminates the technique.

“To injure an opponent is to injure yourself. To control aggression without inflicting is the Art of Peace” – Morihei Ueshiba
