Bramcote synchronised swimmers make a splash!

Added 26 Feb 2019 by GFORCE

A Nottinghamshire based synchronised swimming team is celebrating after receiving vital funding from a unique sporting campaign.

Bramcote swimming club’s AquaStars has been given £500 from the GFORCE Sportswear’s Grassroots Campaign, which aims to provide financial support to help local sports teams and clubs from across the region achieve their aspirations, to purchase a variety of unique training equipment.

Founded in 2014, the AquaStars has grown five-fold in recent years and now boasts over 60 members. The club now has an increased focus on improving results at competitions and this year has seen its best performances to date. In the 2018 National Combo Cup competition held in July, the AquaStars exceeded all expectations medalling in three of the four events entered. In addition, the Under 12 team came third as did the 13-18 team with the 13-15 team taking gold. Overall, they were ranked the fourth best club in the country out of 34.

Lenka Tanner, the AquaStars coach, said: “Synchronised swimming has always been a niche sport, but the scope to grow has begun not only locally but also internationally through one recent rule change. In 2014, FINA the international governing body, approved that male synchronised swimmers were allowed to compete internationally and this had had repercussions at grassroots levels whereby clubs are welcoming and actively recruiting more males into the sport. Furthermore, as only one of four synchro clubs in the East Midlands, we have been actively involved in growing the sport in this region by supporting introductory classes as well as recently organising a residential Midlands Synchro Summer Camp at the University of Nottingham.

“It really is a sport on the up and this has been reinforced by the fantastic donation our club has received from the Grassroots Campaign which tops off a great year for us. Synchro swimmers spend a lot of time underwater and although we currently have a sound system with an underwater speaker, we were desperately in need of a wireless microphone to use in training. The funding allows us to buy that as well specialist therabands and aquabands to help enhance flexibility, strength and core strength that will be used in our pool sessions as well as our land training sessions.

“Thank you again to GFORCE for providing our club this opportunity to win funding!”

After two successful years in which GFORCE Sportswear’s Grassroots Campaign made 12 donations at a total of £10,000 to clubs and teams across the Midlands the company has again set aside a £5,000 pot of money for 2018 reinforcing its commitment to grassroots sport.

Simon Ward, sales director at GFORCE Sportswear, said: “We are delighted to provide the Bramcote AquaStars with funding to purchase this much needed equipment which is set to enhance the performance of what is evidently a very talented group of athletes.

“As demonstrated by the recent growth and success of the Bramcote AquaStars, synchronised swimming is an increasingly popular sport and we are pleased to be able to show our support to in this way. We look forward to hearing about the future success of the club and wish them all the very best for their future competitions.”
