Hairless wonder raises over £6K for British Heart Foundation

Added 18 Sep 2013 by GFORCE

Gymphlex would like to extend their congratulations to Rob Britton who has recently completed the Bournemouth Pier2Pier swim in aid of The British Heart Foundation. To raise the stakes somewhat Rob not only pledged to brave the 1.4mile swim in the English Channel he also promised to shave off his head and body hair if he raised enough money. He exceeded his sponsorship target so, on the 14th July, looking like swimming icon Duncan Goodhew, he braved the sea in only his bespoke GFORCE swimming trunks.

Rob, from Leicester, chose to undertake this decidedly chilly challenge after his brother suffered an infection of his heart whilst honeymooning in the Maldives. The nature of the heart infection led to him being airlifted to Bangkok and then back to the UK, whilst requiring regular shocks to keep him alive. After undergoing several critical medical procedures, Rob’s brother Andrew is now confined to hospital and awaiting a heart transplant. Rob takes up the story:-
“My brother’s experience brought home to me the fact that there is currently no cure for heart failure. People who live with heart failure are managed on a combination of drugs and implantable devices to control the symptoms. The only ‘cure’ is to have a heart transplant if the symptoms worsen. Taking part in this swim helped me feel like I was doing something positive, raising awareness of heart failure and the organ donor register and raising much needed funds for furthering research into heart failure. I was bowled over by the response I had. To date I have raised £6751 – which is fantastic. Gymphlex were also great, readily donating their services to create my trunks, complete with a call to fundraising action on the rear!”
Rob was one of only a handful of swimmers who did not wear a wet suit for the swim. Gymphlex also provided a shirt for Rob to wear once out of the water.
