Introducing the inspirational Invictus Games!

In this GFORCE sports blog we take a look at the Invictus Games.

The Invictus Games is an Olympic-style event whichis specifically for injured or sick people who have served in the armed forces, with the latest edition set to take place in Sydney this October. The name comes from a Latin term meaning 'unconquered' and competitors take part in sports such as Paralympic athletics, wheelchair rugby and sitting volleyball, showing that they are not conquered by their injuries.

The organisers say: "The Games harness the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for those who serve their country."

The Games were createdby Prince Harry who was inspired when watching the Warrior Games, a similar event held for veterans in the USA.

The first edition of the Invictus Games took place in 2014 in London, with subsequent Games in 2016 and 2017 being hosted by the United States and Canada respectively.Between 20-27 October,Sydney will play host to the latest Invictus Games and will welcome 16 other countries from all over the world to take part.Iraq, Afghanistan and Jordan will come from the Middle East, Canada and the USA from North America, a host of countries from Europe including Estonia, Denmark and Italy, and New Zealand help to fly the flag for Oceania along with the hosts. In each edition, the participation has grown and widened.

After Sydney, the 2020 Invictus Games will be hosted in The Hague in the Netherlands.Perhaps, eventually, the Invictus Games will grow and rival the likes of the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. Considering its meteoric risein just four years since its first edition, anything is possible
